SWF Files for LED Edit: The Free Effects Format Explained
SWF files are the classic animation format used by LED Edit and compatible pixel LED software. A single SWF effect file contains a complete animated sequence — a fire, a flag wave, a rainbow sweep, a text animation — that LED Edit plays on your LED matrix or pixel display. SWF is short for Shockwave Flash, and it is one of the two effect formats (the other being TOL) that LED Edit imports natively.
How to Import SWF Files into LED Edit
- Download the SWF effects you want to use (see the libraries below).
- Open LED Edit on your Windows PC.
- Go to File → Import TOL/SWF (in some versions File → Import Effects).
- Select the SWF file from your hard drive. LED Edit converts it into its internal effect format.
- Assign the effect to your layout, adjust speed and colors, and export it to your controller via USB or SD card.
Tip: effects made for one LedEdit version usually work in others (2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and newer), but older SWF files may look different at higher resolutions — check the preview before exporting.

SWF vs AVI vs TOL for LED Displays
| Format | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| SWF | Vector Flash animation | Sharp effects at any size, fast playback on SD-card controllers |
| TOL | LedEdit’s native effect template | Effects designed specifically for LedEdit workflows |
| AVI / MP4 | Video files | Full-motion content like clips, shows, and mapped video |
If your controller supports SD card playback, SWF effects are the most reliable choice: they are small, playback is smooth, and you can store hundreds of effects on one card.
